Jerome Powell, the president of the Federal Reserve, sees a future in a digital dollar. A central, digital banking currency (CBDC) can improve payments. This is what Powell said during an online panel discussion organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to Powell, payments can be made cheaper and faster. Moreover, the current system also excludes certain groups. He sees digital bank tokens as a solution for this. However, he hurried to say that the Fed has no concrete plans to launch a digital dollar.

As is well known, the Federal Reserve, just like the IRS, is a private and not a public institution as is the case in the Netherlands.

For example, an unknown number of commercial, American banks are shareholders of the Fed. They are anxious that their influence by a CBDC does not diminish.

Reportedly, 80% of all central banks worldwide are developing a CBDC concept. The Dutch Central Bank is also working on a pilot. The most striking is China, which is testing its digital currency with a consortium of banks and tech companies.

According to this statistic, ‘old hands’ are selling their Bitcoin.

On-chain data shows that more and more Bitcoin (BTC) is shifting from “old” Bitcoin wallets. Is it the experienced hodlers who want to take advantage of the price increase and start selling?

Glassnode is a research agency from Berlin that maps data on the Bitcoin blockchain. They have created a new indicator. It is called the Coin Dormancy. The approach: how old is the bit of Bitcoin of a transaction (or: UTXO), looked at the date it was received.

The graph below shows that more and more ‘dormant addresses’ are sending their BTC. Glassnode describes the indicator as follows: the average number of days that the sent Bitcoin was inactive before the transaction was made.

Have you had Bitcoin in a wallet for four years and are you going to send it? Then this transaction gets a high score. Vice versa: have you only had some BTC in a wallet for a month? Then you get a low score and bring the total down.
